One of the things that marks the observance of Hanukkah is the lighting of candles. God has marked Israel with being the messenger of light. Isaiah 10:17 for example says, “And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame….. and Isaiah 9:2 says, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined”. What is the significance of the candle lighting and connection with the understanding that Israel has always been associated with the symbol of light to the nations, and the light to the world?
