Where are the Prophets?

Innumerable it seems are the issues facing the nation. Abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, self defense and ownership of guns, marriage, parental rights, pornography, gambling, alcohol use and abuse,
drugs, the environment, crime, corruption in government, government assistance, national defense, foreign policy, freedom of speech, religious liberty, etc., etc., etc. What seems glaringly scarce are genuine prophets. The prophets of old were God’s spokesman for their day. They interpreted the times according to the revelation of God.

There is a sense in which every pastor must play the role of the prophet. Yet today such preaching would be enough to put goose bumps on the back of the pews of most churches. W. Phillip Keller has eloquently written: “[I]n so many places the pastors and teachers are well-nigh silent about social ills. They make no strong stand against those elements that are destroying their people. They carry no deep conviction about the corruption all about them. They will not risk a confrontation with the forces of evil. Their silence gives tacit approval to the wrong influences and human philosophies which are tearing us to pieces.  “The leaders are fearful lest they be blamed eccentrics, puritans, or prophets of doom. They much prefer to be popular.” [1]

Some evangelical leaders seem mystified by Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, and his lead in the polls among evangelical voters. Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association has accurately stated that there is really “little to be liked in the Donald’s worldview and personal history.” [2]I would agree, but perhaps it’s that a vast host of evangelicals are drawn to something Trump does that they rarely hear in the pulpits of their own churches. He speaks with passion, boldness, and authority. Americans, including evangelical Christians, are tired of leaders who have little or no moxie.

I suggest the nation has been deprived of prophets – prophets like those described in the Scriptures – men who had great capacity for emotion – men who were capable of deep feelings. Men who had fire in their bellies and their words could breathe fire in righteous indignation. At other times there utterances would be mingled with tears.

The late G. Earl Guinn, who was once the Chairman of the Department of Preaching at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, put it this way: “The true man of God can weep at suffering, he can get downright mad at sin, and he can rejoice at moral progress.” [3] Richard Baxter wrote: “I preach as though I were never sure to preach again, and as a dying man to dying men.” [4] Too much preaching today fails to be based solidly in the moral authority of God’s Word and delivered out of deep conviction. Instead, it is made up of nice little warm fuzzy remarks sprinkled with a few anecdotes meant to make us feel good about ourselves, when the very wrath of God abides on us. The results of such preaching are devastating on more levels than we can know. It is not hyperbole to say that our culture is quickly headed for destruction. The hope for our restoration lies in remedies of the heart,  where our problems really exist. The sickness killing us is our willful rejection of God and his order.

But to quote again from G. Earl Guinn: “Apparently instead of hearing prophets of God sounding a trumpet call to obedience and faith, they have heard inoffensive little men tooting piccolos and then running to the door [of the church] to grin like Cheshire cats at those whose compliments are demanded by their itching ears.” [5] Indeed. Where are the prophets?

Jesus was the ultimate prophet. He wasn’t concerned about being palatable or appealing. His message was distinct and divergent from a corrupt society. His zeal for the Father’s way so consumed him that at times it must have seemed as though he was trying to prevent the possibility of followers.  He made tall demands, calling for hardship and cross-bearing. He warned that anyone who would be his disciple would experience alienation from friends and even family members.  He spoke against entrenched evil and misguided powers, powers that precipitated injustice, powers that humanly speaking; he could only offend to his own disadvantage and never possibly overcome.  He demonstrated by both his life and words that the Creator God is Holy and demands the same of those made in his image. Moreover, in the end, he was willing to lay down everything to redeem the ones who failed to understand him and were hostile to his ministry. Where are the prophets like Jesus?

In 1846 the fate of our nation depended on Andrew Jackson’s trusted messenger, Holdfast Gaines, an Indian scout. Gaines was encamped with the American army on Mobile Bay when word came to Jackson that a large British force had set sail for New Orleans. The one chance was for the General to swiftly get word to General “Dandy” Carroll in Nashville, so he could rally the long rifle frontiersman of Tennessee and Kentucky to rendezvous with him in New Orleans. But how was this to be done with 600 miles of wilderness between them?  General Jackson’s prospects of stopping the British lie with one man – Gaines. So he gave his trusted messenger the assignment and said, “I’ll give you ten days to get there! May the Lord of hosts bless your legs!”  At sunset on October 12, as General Carroll sat dining, Holdfast Gaines stumbled through the doorway, making the 600 mile trek in six days and five nights!  General Carroll rallied the long riflemen and met up with General Jackson in New Orleans. The British were defeated. New Orleans was saved because the messenger laid everything on the line to deliver his message. [6]

The fate of our nation hangs in the balance again. It’s not an enemy from without that threatens this time, but the enemy from within our sinful souls. Our hope, in large degree, is dependent on whether we have prophets of God willing to pay any price to deliver his message.

But where are the prophets?

By Dr. Mark Creech

A Once Great Institution Succumbs!

The faculty council at Wheaton College, once a bastion of evangelical Christianity, has recommended that the effort to terminate associate Professor Larycia Hawkins end.  The reason for their recommendation?  They cited “grave concerns about the process.”  The exact specifics of those concerns remain unknown.

If you will remember, Hawkins drew national attention when she began wearing a headscarf to show solidarity with Muslims who had experienced what she called “vitriolic” rhetoric following the Paris and San Bernardino terrorist attacks.  “I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book,”
Hawkins wrote on social media. “And as Pope Francis stated … we worship the same God.”  The college placed Hawkins on leave, pending a full review of the “theological implications” of her comments.

Regardless of the final decision Wheaton reaches with regard to the “theological implications” of Mrs. Hawkins actions, one thing is certain!  Both she and Pope Francis are TOTALLY WRONG!  We (Christians
and Muslims) DO NOT worship the same God!  And, while both Christians and Muslims may be “people of the book,” the books are VASTLY different!

The Deities of both books are different–Allah, being a “god” of violence, Jesus being the Prince of Peace!  The basic message of both books is also completely different–one (the Koran), a message of victory thru violence, the other (the Bible), a message of redemption and victory thru Christ!  The teachers of both books are polar opposites–Muslim Imams incite violence and deception, while true Christian preachers proclaim a message of truth and love!  The followers of each book’s teaching could not be more diametrically opposite!  True followers of Islam and the teachings of Mohammed desire the eradication of ALL who will not submit to Islamic ideology!  The followers of Christ seek the redemption of those Satanically enslaved in Islam’s web of deceit! Islam has an end-time eschatology that believes in the arrival of a Mahdi–a great one who brings world peace.  Of course, Christianity believes a false Messiah will step onto the end-time world stage, deceiving the masses who’ve rejected Christ.  But, the True Messiah, Jesus Christ, will return to this earth, ultimately bringing genuine peace!  It is my firm belief that the Islamic Mahdi will be the one the Bible calls the Anti-Christ!

So, it was for very legitimate reasons that Wheaton placed Mrs. Hawkins on leave!  Islam and Christianity could not be more incompatible!  What is tragic, yea heartbreaking, is to see that once great school succumb
to political correctness and outright error!  Wheaton’s compromise MUST NOT become our compromise! Wheaton’s fear, MUST NOT be mirrored by those of us who genuinely are people of The Book–the Word of the Living God!
No, regardless of what others may do, we must say (and do) as did Joshua of old–“as for me, and my house, WE will serve (and stay unequivocally faithful to) the LORD!”

Bringing the Darkness of Abortion Into the Light

For nearly 43 years since Roe v. Wade—and for decades before that landmark case—abortion has been an ugly subject that many tried to hide under cover. But abortion must be one of the topics brought to light by pastors—especially this month.

“This fact is, we can no longer ignore abortion in our churches,” said APN President Sam Rohrer. “Many may be struggling with the scars of abortion in their own lives, and looking to the church for help, healing and restoration. Additionally, we must equip our people to stand up for the sanctity of life in their own communities, states and across the nation. In 2015, we were all awakened to the gruesome business of abortion, with the exposure of the barbaric practices of Planned Parenthood, who has now filed a lawsuit against the Center for Medical Progress, which spearheaded the revealing videos. Now that the seedy underbelly of the abortion industry has been uncovered, we can no longer turn a blind eye to this black mark on American history.”

In the days leading up to the Jan. 22 anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in America, Rohrer will discuss how churches can address abortion and bring the dark issue into the light during the daily, one-hour “Stand in the Gap Today”, which currently airs on 20 stations in America and addresses the cultural and moral issues of our time from a constitutional and biblical perspective.

In breaking news Thursday, The Washington Times reported that former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich “has teamed up with Christian organizations and pastors in an effort to influence the House of Representatives to overturn President Obama’s veto of legislation that would have defunded Planned Parenthood.” The veto override vote, for which two-thirds is needed for passage, is Jan. 26.

Gingrich is co-hosting a conference call at 2:15 p.m. EST today, Jan. 15, specifically with pastors, in support of the effort to marshal the votes needed, according to The Washington Times, with the following letter:

Dear Pastor,

I am writing to invite you to join a pastor conference call with Congressman Trent Franks of Arizona, Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma, and me this Friday, January 15th, at 2:15 p.m. Eastern Time.

We want to discuss the urgent matter of protecting unborn life by ending the federal funding of Planned Parenthood.

On Friday’s pastor conference call, we’d like to discuss with you how we can put pressure on every single elected official to vote with us.

So please join us for this pastor’s conference call this Friday, January 15, to hear how you can be a part of this effort.

Again, the call is scheduled for this Friday, January 15, at 2:15 p.m. EST/1:15 p.m. CST/12:15 p.m. MST/11:15 a.m. PST, on our national Tele-Townhall Conference Call Number.

The dial in number is 877-229-8493, PIN 114559.

Rohrer also encouraged pastors to find pro-life events in their communities so that members of their congregations could perhaps participate.

One of the largest events is the annual March for Life, where tens of thousands of concerned pro-life Americans travel to Washington, D.C., to stand for the unborn. For more on the March, along with related events, visitwww.marchforlife.org/mfl-2016. A pro-life calendar of events is also available at www.calendarforlife.org, where visitors can enter their zip code to find events in their area.

Added Gary Dull, APN board member and executive director and vice president of the Pennsylvania Pastors Network (PPN, www.papastors.net), “January is a wonderful time for pastors to unite and mobilize their congregations to stand for life together in their communities. We encourage all pastors and church leaders to also consider hosting an event or special prayer service in their own church as well.”

A Challenge to America’s Pulpits in 2016

Sam Rohrer, APN President, interviews with Jim Schneider, host of CrossTalk on the VCY America Network

(Air Date: Jan. 04, 2016)

Below are some of the highlights of this interview:

Introduction:
Jim began by noting that while there are churches that are taking a stand for biblical truth, there are others that are capitulating to popular thought and opinion. Some have compromised on marriage, morality, decency and life. Others are so focused on entertainment that God’s Word is hardly regarded. Some have cut out portions of Scripture because they are in conflict with a world that has turned itself against God. Some pastors are feeling the pressure of church boards and/or congregations to avoid certain issues for the sake of unity.

Jim then introduced Sam Rohrer. Sam is the president of the American Pastors Network and the Pennsylvania Pastors Network. He served 18 years in the Pennsylvania legislature and was a former candidate for governor in Pennsylvania. In his role with the American Pastors Network he encourages pastors to boldly preach biblical truth, especially on issues affecting our current society.

Jim stated the following, ‘…in all we talk about today, the number one issue that pulpits must proclaim across this nation and not compromise on is the life saving message of the gospel—Jesus Christ died for our sins, he was buried he rose again the third day—this is a message that is essential and is the basis for everything else we talk about here on the broadcast today.’

Sam replied by stating that he was glad Jim began where he did because that’s the point where freedom begins. He doesn’t believe it is possible to really understand or appreciate civil freedom until you understand and have tasted spiritual freedom which is being free from our bondage to sin. That must be the primary message of the gospel but unfortunately that’s where Sam feels many pastors stop. After that, pastors need to take people to the point of discipleship and that is something greatly lacking in America today.

For Sam the whole issue comes down to whether or not you recognize that God through Jesus Christ is authoritative and is all truth. This is the difficulty we face as our culture moves away from a Judeo-Christian recognition of who and what truth is into the subjective culture. This means that today, the ‘odd man out’ is the Christian. You can hold a firm view on everything else but not on biblical truth yet it’s biblical truth that God will ultimately measure us by both now and later.

So if you’ve ever wondered what happened to the concept of ‘Thus saith the Lord’, join Jim as he has Sam answer that question in this 2016 challenge to America’s pulpits.

Are pulpits falling short of preaching the whole counsel of God?

Yes, statistics prove it. 90% say they believe the Bible speaks to the issues of life, but only 10% actually preach to those issues.  The pulpits of America have been silent on the very basic issues of life that affect all of us.

You’re challenging pastors to speak out on issues, what are those issues?

  • Less than 30% of pastors, even Evangelicals, believe that the Bible is authoritative.  This is the first issue, they must believe that the Word of God is true and applicable to all aspects of life.
  • The Bible speaks to all issues of life and must be preached from the pulpit. Issues like:
  1. Islam
  2. Religious freedom
  3. Immigrants who don’t want to assimilate
  4. Marriage
  5. Corruption in government
  6. Gun-control

Anything you hear on the radio or TV can be filtered through the lens of Scripture. Truth should be applied and talked about from the pulpit. If pastors don’t speak to the areas that apply beyond the walls of the church, which is where the church member lives, then it is of no value.  Pastors should not just speak to matters of salvation, but should disciple believers so that they are engaging the culture as salt and light. They should preach the whole counsel of God even when it’s controversial.

Why won’t Pastors preach on the issues?

  1. The issues are controversial. Pastors don’t want to lose people from their congregations.
  2. Many have been taught in seminary that they shouldn’t teach or preach about these things because it’s political. But people need to know what the Bible says about what is happening around us-politically as well.
  3. Afraid of losing tax-exempt status. Churches used to be the place that people went to, to find out how to vote.  Pastors were the ones who gave biblical qualifications for the candidates. Churches and Pastors are allowed to say more than they think is allowable by law and need to be informed on this issue.
  4. Fearing man more than God.

But as we are to obey the law of the land, is it right to speak against it?

God’s moral law always transcends any civil law.  That’s what the Bible means when it says we ought to obey God rather than man. When God has made a clear statement of what ought to be, no man can undo it.  One of the marks of a nation under God’s judgment is when they proclaim to be true what is false and vice versa.  We’ve done this on marriage.  God’s law cannot be trumped by civil law.

Do you think it will come to the point where the government will mandate that churches conduct same-sex marriages?

We already know that this is the direction they want to go.  Any nation that redefines what God says, will face judgment.  Yes, the pressure is already being felt by pastors such as in TX where the pastors were required to turn in their sermons for evaluation. It didn’t happen, but if the pulpits don’t speak boldly, so that people understand what is happening, this is where we’re headed.

What if the church board wants the pastor to back down, and not rock the boat?

When pastors begin to speak more boldly from the pulpit, this will happen.  As the shepherd of the flock, he must begin to preach in a way that considers where people are, so that he lays out the word of God and leads his people to the truth.  That is what preaching is-teaching and convincing people to obey and honor the truth.  Will people leave? They may, but others are looking for a pastor who will speak boldly and so the church will fill again.

What do people do when their churches are OK with PP, Same-sex marriage, national health care, etc.?

If they are in a church that has embraced a position that accepts things that are abominable to God, they need to get out.  If a pastor is just timid, the church goer should go to their pastor and ask them to preach on the issues.  Many are doing this today.

2016 is a vital election year, what should people take into account as they consider candidates?

Pastors need to preach on this:

  1. The qualifications of a particular candidate:
    1. Do they fear God?
    2. Hate bribery?
    3. Shun corruption?
    4. Commit to tell the truth?
    5. Do they know Christ as Savior?

Until we begin viewing candidates the way God does, we’ll continue to get the same results.

I feel like when I vote, I’m voting for the lesser of two evils.  OR I don’t agree with either candidate, so I’m going to sit it out.

If two candidates are evil like an Adolf Hitler, or a Joseph Stalin, believers should not vote for them.

But that’s not what we’ve been presented with.  We might have a novice who knows the Lord but doesn’t have much experience, or someone who doesn’t have it all right on all the issues, but has integrity and character, fears God and wants to do what’s right. If we have pro-life candidates, then we must participate in the vote.

Unfortunately, the church hasn’t been encouraging candidates to run for office who know the Lord.  This is a problem and we should be prayerfully assisting those who are worthy of the office, to successfully get in office.

If both candidates embrace homosexuality, Islam, abortion-don’t vote for either one, but that’s not what we usually have.

What is APN doing to help pastors?

APN is establishing State Chapters, networks of “remnant pastors” who will boldly stand for truth in the pulpit and the public square.  We are equipping and training them to lead through various outreaches like conference Calls, events, radio programs and more.

Who/what is the Remnant?

  1. The Remnant believes in the Authority of Scripture and Salvation by Faith in Christ Alone.
  2. The remnant understands the sovereignty of God and that His Plan is all about the Plan of Redemption.
  3. The Remnant knows that God will reward on the basis of faithfulness and so they are concerned about obedience. They know that the results are up to God.
  4. The Remnant will always respond to the Truth.
  5. The Remnant are those who know the Truth, hold the Truth, and are committed to Standing in the Gap for Truth.
  6. The Remnant is not made up of those who say nice things but those who say true things and actually live it.
  7. The Remnant has a message of not only holiness but a conviction that requires change.
  8. The Remnant asks: “What does God say. And, what God says I will do. That is biblical obedience and obedience from the heart.”
  9. The Remnant will respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit on matters of Truth. They will stand for Truth. They will not compromise or fall before those who would pursue or accost them on behalf of their stand for Truth.

We often hear from listeners who listen to our program, and talk to friends and co-workers about what’s happening on the news, but these friends don’t know about what’s happening and don’t believe what we are saying. How can we encourage people to be educated about the issues?

First, we should speak lovingly to them, regardless of where they are, because Christ saved us-when we were of the same mindset!  Second, we should share truth when we can. We can also point them to others who are telling the truth.  They can tune into radio stations like yours, or programs like ours.  And then we certainly must pray. It is spiritual warfare and we must pray that the Holy Spirit takes the truth we are speaking, and touches the hearts of those who are listening.

Some say we have freedom of “worship” but not freedom of religion.  We should keep our faith within the walls of our churches, don’t bring it out in public.  What can we do to shine as lights in this dark culture?

We are Ambassadors for Christ.  That’s a political term.  An Ambassador represents an authority, a nation.  We represent Jesus Christ and just as an ambassador is a representative ALL of the time, being a Christian is a 24 hour job.  Our light must shine all of the time.  We can’t turn it off and on, and even though we are in an increasingly hostile world, we must continue to more effectively represent Christ. The opportunity is even greater than it was before, the necessity is greater, and we must be His emissaries until He returns.

Callers:

Robert: A friend of mine has left the church over the issue of gay marriage, and wants to start their own church.  The law condones same-sex marriage and it has caused many people to leave the church in my nation.

The foreign policy of this nation has required other nations to adopt the same attitude towards same-sex marriage in return for our financial, political, or other support.  This stance on same-sex marriage is far reaching, unfortunately.

Mason: My Lutheran Church has a woman pastor.  The acolytes and ushers are all women and the denomination is now open to homosexual pastors. There’s no substance to the messages.  The pastors preach on the same topics, and stories we’ve heard over and over.

Jim: When will men step up and take leadership roles?

Sam: God’s design for the man is clearly established, just as His design for women is clearly established. But if the men don’t fulfill that design, than God might call a woman.  But when churches do what is not biblical, it opens up a door that can’t be shut and anything goes.

Jim: We need spiritual food. The proclamation of God’s word.  II Timothy 3 tells us that perilous times will come and pastors need to preach the word!

Sam: Truth has always been under assault-starting in the Garden of Eden.  Those who know the truth must defend, contend, articulate, and live the faith.  We must not sit back but rather allow the Scriptures to guide us.

Cathy: People say the Bible is not relevant for today. Children only hear Bible stories and they are not taught how to defend their faith when they go to college.  Pastors want non-Christians to come in and then accommodate them with worldly entertainment, etc…what does the Christian do? Instead of the church influencing the culture, the culture is influencing the church.

Sam: I’m afraid she’s correct. The world is 10 steps behind the church. As the church lowers the standard, the world will be even farther away from the truth.  When we lessen the standard of God’s Word, the world will be even further behind.  The church has failed and must come back to the moral standard, God is the judge and we will give an account.  We must ask ourselves, “Am I living a righteous life? What does the mirror say when it reflects how I live?

Victoria: Many pastors are reluctantly caving to the pressure of the congregation, the incorporation of churches (501c3) is also a problem and the church will be tested in this area.  Soon the need will come for pastors to make a decision between God and the government.

There will be many who will stand before Christ to whom he will say “Depart from Me, I never knew you”.  There will be a time that each will give an account for what they have done with Christ.  There are many in the pulpit, pews, and nation who wrongly think they are a Christian because they were born here, but if people heard truth from the pulpit, they would be convicted and be saved. The gospel is the foundation and then discipleship comes next-moving outside the walls of the church to live for Christ in this culture.

What is the most important message you want to leave with listeners:

Know the word of God, stand firmly on it, and obedience is more important than

Marriage Matters: Why Are Pastors Not Addressing Top Issues from the Pulpit?

Biblical marriage certainly took a hit this year, as on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in every state in the nation. Now, six months later, pastors and churches are still struggling with how to deal with this sensitive and sometimes-controversial issue within their congregations.

To close out a historic year in many arenas, the American Pastors Network and the Pennsylvania Pastors Network (PPN, www.papastors.net) are encouraging pastors across the country to take on the tough topics like marriage and not shy away from the controversy they may cause.

“Marriage and homosexuality are two of the most important issues in the church today,” said APN and PPN President Sam Rohrer, “and there is perhaps no area of ministry more crucial. In particular, pastors must not avoid preaching biblical truth about marriage—about how God designed this holy union between one many and one woman. Anything outside of that scope falls short of God’s law and His plan, even if the law of the land says otherwise.

“One of the goals of the American Pastors Network is to continually encourage pastors to be effective ‘salt and light’ in this dark world and preach the ‘whole counsel of God,’” Rohrer continued. “There is no greater calling for these ‘Ministers of God’ and no greater responsibility to God’s people. Especially in these sometimes-discouraging times, the church must be a light, and pastors must be committed to bringing these issues to the pulpit—and to their congregations.”

Rohrer says he sees six reasons pastors may shy away from addressing these hot-button issues:

  1. Fear of controversy or pushback from those in the pews if biblical principles are applied to the issues of the day.
  2. Negative theological training regarding talking about impacting the culture or discussion of anything regarding civil government or politics.
  3. Unjustified fear of losing their 501(c)(3) status.
  4. Being unaware of the historical role of pastors in the history of America.
  5. Believing that the primary purpose for preaching is limited to “preaching the Gospel” rather than training and “making disciples.”
  6. Having more of a fear of man rather than a fear of God.

Added Gary Dull, APN board member and executive director and vice president of PPN, “There is perhaps no issue that touches more churchgoers than that of marriage. Despite what the law now says, our pastors must continue to speak the truth about God’s design for all relationships. To hide this truth from our congregations is not helping them to live biblically, but rather, shortchanges them of what God intended for all of our lives.”

Research has shown that pastors are purposefully skirting some controversial topics when preparing their messages for the pulpit, but Rohrer and Dull say the task must be tackled, no matter how uncomfortable it might be.

Last summer, George Barna, founder of the Barna Group, shared research that found that while about 90 percent of theologically conservative pastors believe the Bible speaks to societal issues, fewer than 10 percent of these pastors are teaching people what the Bible says on these topics.

The research, conducted through the American Culture and Faith Institute, asked pastors across the country about their beliefs regarding the relevancy of scripture to societal, moral and political issues, and the content of their sermons in light of their beliefs. Barna stated that many pastors are afraid to get involved in political issues because of the controversy it might create. And, he added, “Controversy keeps people from being in the seats, controversy keeps people from giving money, from attending programs.”

How Should We Treat Immigrants?

American Pastors Network President, Sam Rohrer, recently sent a letter to Gov. Tom Wolf, urging him to  to reconsider his position to welcome potentially unvetted Syrian refugees to the Commonwealth.

Below is a copy of his letter:

Nov. 24, 2015

Dear Governor Wolf,

The matter of the resettling of Syrian ‘refugees’ is unfortunately not just controversial due to the economic impact of the resettling of these individuals but it goes to the very heart of the safety of our citizenry in not just Pennsylvania but our entire nation. As Governor of Pennsylvania, you assumed the duty to uphold the laws of this Commonwealth and to provide moral leadership in times of uncertainty and public angst. A primary responsibility you possess is to protect the lives, property, and safety of the citizens of this Commonwealth. Yet, your recent comments about wanting to bring in Syrian refugees seems to cast aside this primary duty and notably places you among a shrinking minority of Governors who are willing to ignore the inherent threat these ‘refugees’ and potential ‘embedded jihadists’ pose.

I am writing to you from two perspectives. One is that of a former 18 year Member of the PA General Assembly and a former candidate for the office you now occupy. I understand both the challenges of leading as well as the lawful duty to our Constitution. But, I also understand the moral duty to God as I write to you as a preacher and the President of the American Pastors Network– the nation’s largest network of pastors and currently also serving as President of the Pennsylvania Pastors Network – representing pastors from over 30 different denominations.

From these two perspectives, I urge you to immediately rescind your decision to accept and place any Syrian ‘refugee’ or any ‘refugee’ in Pennsylvania who embraces the Muslim ideology regardless of the nation from which they hail unless they will affirm in writing their commitment to our Constitution, and forswear Sharia law. With that statement, I know that you immediately might raise the question of ‘religious discrimination’ or denying our historic humanitarian disposition. But this would not be true. I pose these questions as reasons to you for your consideration and the justification for denying acceptance into the Commonwealth of PA.

  • If (since) the protection of the Citizens of the Commonwealth is one of your highest duties, how does bringing in Syrian Muslim ‘refugees’ augment or strengthen the security of our citizens?
  • Since even the FBI, and leading Congressmen, and this last week the leader of the NYC Syrian community all confirm that it is literally ‘impossible’ or ‘laughable’ for anyone to suggest that anyone can legitimately vet these ‘refugees’ since there is literally no database in Syria and many other nations, there is an overwhelming likelihood that jihadists are among the mix. In light of this, how is the Wolfe administration personally assuring the Members of the Legislature and the citizens that you are not inviting in ‘Islamic embedded jihadists’ under the guise of ‘refugees’ to Pennsylvania?
  • Since you have taken an oath to support the Constitution and to enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of PA, what law or Constitutional mandate are you claiming to justify risking property and life of PA citizens?
  • How are you responding to numerous communications from Members of the House and Senate urging you to rescind your intent to place potential ‘embedded jihadists’ within our Commonwealth?
  • How do you justify the significant economic cost to the taxpayer associated with the placement and acceptance of each person you permit in? What is the number you are using as the immediate and projected costs for each person who you would place and who would receive tax-payer paid benefits?
  • What is your driving motivation to risk life and property of PA citizens in these critical days when we are at war with an Islamic ideology that has sworn to destroy not only our nation but the state of Israel? Is there a compelling Constitutional duty? Is there a statutory duty? Is there a Higher Moral law you believe to be following? Is there an economic motivation? Is there is a political motivation?

From every legitimate vantage point, I do not believe there to be a single legitimate motivation to risk life and property by inviting in people who cannot be sufficiently vetted, whose ideology is Islamic and whose commitment is to Sharia law – a mutually exclusive system of law to our Constitution. In addition, regardless as to Sunni, Shia, or Sophi, Islamic sects all are committed by their obligation to the teachings of the Koran to exclusive worship of Allah, world domination, and the ultimate re-creation of a world caliphate, and who at this current time are waging jihad against the US, Israel and the West.

In our Commonwealth – religious freedom is historically and constitutionally rich. Yet, there is no compelling moral, Biblical or historical justification for inviting in those who hold to an exclusive view of their religion and in the name of their religion wage jihad and mandated to cause death and destruction. Since the Biblical, Constitutional, and established purpose of government as outlined by William Penn himself in 1682 is to praise those who do well and enact justice against those violate the law or cause harm to life or property, we believe that your decision to place unvetted and potential ‘embedded jihadists’ poses a legitimate ‘risk’ and should be immediately rescinded.

While I and our pastors pray for you and all other in positions of authority, we pray that God will grant you the wisdom to do that which is right and good. I am ready to speak with you or to provide further insights and assistance personally to more fully understand this matter or other matters of public policy that come before you in your office.

As Terror Creeps In, What is the Church’s Role?

Over the weekend, the world mourned violent and deadly attacks in Paris. Now, strikes and raids in the Middle East continue, and those ravaged by war are seeking safety. But the most controversial question remains: “Where should they go?”

In addition to that pressing question, the American Pastors Network is also asking: “How should we pray?” and “What is the Church’s Role?”

APN President Sam Rohrer and Pennsylvania Pastors Network (PPN, www.papastors.net) Executive Director Gary Dull talked about these disturbing headlines this week on the daily one-hour “Stand in the Gap Today” radio program.

“In these extremely trying times, when the rest of the world is considering policy, religious tests, how to handle refugees and their children, and other pressing matters, we must first and foremost consider prayer and turning to God for guidance,” Rohrer said. “The Lord’s way is the only way in all things, especially when so much turmoil and strife plague our world daily. What should be the focus of our prayers? What is the role and focus for pastors? These are questions we must fervently ask.”

The American Pastors Network gives answers on the daily “Stand in the Gap Today” radio program.  On the show this week, the hosts mentioned The Presidential Prayer Team, the largest prayer movement for the nation with 5.2 million members established in September 2001, which recently issued a Prayer Alert calling for prayer about:

  • God’s protection over America and freedom from fear of imminent ISIS actions in the United States.
  • Law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the U.S to apprehend ISIS operatives on American soil.
  • That Americans would take the ISIS threat seriously.
  • The decision to bring Syrian refugees into the U.S. and the vetting process.

This week, presidential hopeful Ted Cruz introduced legislation that would allow Congress to bar the 10,000 Syrian refugees that may be crossing the U.S. border before the end of the year, according to the Washington Post. Likewise, according to the Prayer Alert, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) is calling for a temporary stop to Syrian refugees from coming into the country. TheHill.com is also reporting that Speaker Paul Ryan says the House may vote this week on a bill to pause the refugee influx.

In Pennsylvania, the home of PPN, Gov. Tom Wolf has stated that he will not prevent Syrian refugees from entering the state.

“It is a serious matter that Gov. Wolf is welcoming Syrian refugees into our state with open arms,” Dull said. “Yes, as Christians, we are to clothe, feed and care for the poor and the lost, as Jesus commanded. But when it comes to allowing potentially dangerous people with possible evil intentions into our own home, we must think, act and react in a manner that is safest for our nation. Many other governors have already said their states will not be opening their doors to refugees because there is simply no way to know who truly needs asylum and who is evil. There is too much at risk.”

‘Arrogant’ Congressional Letter Urges Ukraine Parliament to Include LGBT Agenda into New Constitution

Forty members of Congress have signed what the American Pastors Network  says is a “despicable” letter to Ukraine Parliament leaders, urging them to include same-sex protections into Ukraine’s new constitution.

“We write today to urge you to ensure that as legal and constitutional reforms advance in Ukraine, the principles of equality and non-discrimination in human rights and state protection become firmly entrenched in Ukrainian law,” the letter began. “We support the enjoyment of constitutionally protected rights of all Ukrainian citizens without discrimination.” (Read the full text of the letter on the APN website.)

The letter goes on to say that the 40 members of Congress who signed the letter “applaud the prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of ‘gender, race, skin color, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or other opinion’ … However, the draft does not explicitly ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.  This is a prime opportunity to send a message that violence and discrimination against LGBTI people is not acceptable.”

APN President Sam Rohrer says the letter confirms earlier reports by the Obama administration and supportive members of Congress, as they have repeatedly elevated the LGBT agenda as a matter of premier foreign policy. This recurring effort to leverage other sovereign nations to embrace the LGBT agenda as equal to fundamental God-given natural rights is arrogant and misdirected, Rohrer said.

The letter also brings up serious questions, Rohrer added, including: 1) Do these Congressional members and this Administration even care how other nations are viewing the U.S. when it attempts to leverage policies that are not biblical and have significant consequences?; and 2) Do they even care what God thinks of the U.S. urging the acceptance of the LGBT agenda by an entire country and will He stand idly by?

“This arrogant and audacious letter sent to leaders in the Ukraine from 40 members of the American Congress is a sad commentary on how far our own leaders have fallen from the biblical and constitutional tenets on which this country was founded,” Rohrer said. “This is especially damaging at a time when Ukraine leaders and pastors are desperately trying to rebuild a nation based on the principles of biblical truth and natural law that undergird the American Constitution. Activists who are trying to push the LGBT agenda not only violate their constitutional oath, which does not recognize such concepts, but also inappropriately intrude into the cultural positions held by most other nations against such recognition. This latest effort to infringe on the efforts of Ukraine to fashion a constitution on the ideals that once made America great is not only objectionable but immoral.”

Rohrer, along with pastor Dale Armstrong, APN’s International Directorwho has helped orchestrate APN’s on-the-ground involvement in the Ukraine over the past year, has been working with Ukraine leaders and pastors for many months, fulfilling a request to help them become reenergized in their mission and zeal to bring biblical and constitutional government to Ukraine.

Late last week, Rohrer returned from another trip to Ukraine, where he continued to meet with pastors, leaders and key political figures on the essential elements regarding the formulation of a new constitution.

APN was first invited to a June 2014 International Leadership Summit in Ukraine by Bishop Valery Reshetinsky, who also serves as the Chairman of the Ukrainian Interchurch Council that represents 20 different evangelical denominations. During the initial summit with more than 100 in attendance, Ukrainian pastoral and elected leaders learned about the principles that made America great. Also attending that summit were key government officials from the executive and legislative branches, including top advisers and heads of government agencies and departments. Since those initial events, Rohrer and other APNleaders have been invited back to Ukraine multiple times.

“For years, the people of Ukraine have struggled with government instability, economic setbacks and personal crises,” said Armstrong. “Yet, amid that strife, are men and women who understand that the only way to establish a truly free and prosperous nation is by building a nation based on the foundation of God’s Word and His eternal truth. It has been both eye-opening and sobering to see that even as many in America reject this truth, Ukrainians are making sacrifices in pursuit of it.”

Rohrer continued that Ukrainian leaders have repeatedly confirmed their desire to establish a righteous government free of corruption and bribery, and one that would recognize and protect the basic and inalienable rights granted by God.

Pray for Pastors and Serve Them as Pastor Appreciation Month Comes to a Close

October is Pastor Appreciation Month, and the American Pastors Network is encouraging the faithful to pray for their church leaders—especially as the culture becomes more and more hostile toward pro-life efforts, religious liberties and biblically defined marriage.

“This month especially, as we close out Pastor Appreciation Month, believers—now more than ever—must pray for and serve our pastors and church leaders,” said PPN Executive Director Gary Dull, who is also a board member for the American Pastors Network (www.AmericanPastorsNetwork.net) , of which PPN is a state chapter. “In the face of many life-affecting challenges, pastors have one of the toughest jobs in the world, leading their congregations, serving as the salt and light in a dark world, and making their spouses and families a priority. They need and appreciate our prayers, since daily prayer for these faithful servants will help lift them up and allow them to truly fulfill God’s purpose for their lives. Serving them in small ways like setting up a light breakfast for them once in a while, giving them gift certificates, or any way to encourage or lighten the load ever so slightly goes a long way, too.”

PPN is suggesting several ways Christians can show their appreciation for their pastors:

  • Pray for them daily, and let them know you are praying.
  • Write a note to let them know how greatly they are appreciated in the church and in your life.
  • Take a meal to your pastor’s family, or invite them to your home or out for a dinner together.
  • Make a donation to the Pennsylvania Pastors Network in your pastor’s name so PPN can continue to serve pastors and churches across the state organizing events and offering resources. Visit http://www.papastors.net/donate.
  • Purchase a DVD copy of the “U-Turn: Roadmap for Renewal” conference for pastors and church leaders, hosted in March by PPN in Lancaster, Pa. Click here for more information on single and multiple-pack discounts.

Said one pastor who attended, “I was really blessed by the U-Turn Conference. … This was truly life-changing and transformational. I don’t remember the last time I have been so inspired to want to make a difference in the kingdom of God after attending a conference with such great impact. I was thoroughly energized to know what, how and why we should take back our country for Jesus Christ.”

The organization Serving Leaders Ministries exists to serve pastors and help them deal with the overwhelming responsibility of being a pastor and surviving the multiple attacks by the enemy throughout their tenure at a church. For more information on Serving Leaders, visit www.servingleaders.org.

American Pastors Network: 6 Reasons Pastors Struggle with Preaching to Impact the Culture

Addressing difficult cultural issues from the pulpit can be daunting for pastors. But bringing these matters to congregations is more important than ever. “One of the goals of the American Pastors Network is to continually encourage pastors to be effective ‘salt and light’ in this dark world and preach the ‘whole counsel of God’. There is no greater calling for a ‘Minister of God’ and no greater responsibility to God’s people.”-Sam Rohrer, APN President

Why do pastors shy away from addressing such pressing matters like same-sex marriage, politics, homosexuality, abortion, adultery, pornography and other hot-button issues?

Here’s six reasons:

Research has shown that pastors are purposefully skirting some controversial topics when preparing their messages for the pulpit, but churches and pastors must address these issues, no matter how uncomfortable it might be.

Last summer, George Barna, founder of the Barna Group, shared research that found that a vast majority of theologically conservative pastors believe the Bible speaks to societal issues, but fewer than 10 percent of these pastors are teaching people what the Bible says on these topics.
